he's the only one who knows;
her hands are cold
and it's not just when the wind blows
seems I have lost my whit…
my respect for everyone has gone away
somewhere dark and strange today
her arms curl around the empty air
it's alright there's no one there
and as superfluous as it may seem
she closes her sunken eyes
and dreams a useless dream
when she awakens to reality
she won't remember a thing
what she believes
or if her birds could sing
nothing is left to erase
forgetting to fill this empty space
but then she feels him there
braiding, again, her messy hair
"i want to sit in the rain." she said
"child, you must go back to bed."
he lifts her chin from where it's hung
and they exchange breaths
from lung to heavy lung
he has one last thing to say
before she begs for him to stay
"i will never leave, my dear
and so I will stay beyond your years
i've counted, no doubt, all those tears you've shed
i can recite ever word you've ever said
and all those friends you think are dead
it's all up there
inside your silly little head"
i say my hands are cold
he says he knows
